Everton Tsosie
Everton Tsosie is a contemporary Dine (Navajo) artist based in Santa Fe, New Mexico, whose expressive paintings merge abstraction and figuration to explore identity, resilience, memory, and the complexitities of contemporary Indigenous experience. Through layered surfaces, gestural mark-making, and vivid color, Tsosie creates emotionally charged works that balance personal reflection with broader cultural and social realities.
Drawing influence from the landscapes and communities of the American Southwest, Tsosie's practice engages themes of cultural continuity, environmental vulnerability, spirituality, and collective healing. His paintings often reflect on the intersection of Indigenous history and present-day life, addressing issues ranging from displacement and social inequity to the lived experience of Navajo communities during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Tsosie received his BFA from the University of New Mexico and has emerged as part of a new generation of Indigenous artists expanding the language of contemporary painting through deeply personal and socially engaged perspectives. In 2020, he received First Place at the Virtual Santa Fe Indian Market for his painting The Last of the Pure, a pivotal work responding to the impact of COVID-19 on the Navajo Nation.
His work hs been featured in exhibitions and art fairs including the Santa Fe Indian Market, the Heard Musuem Indian Market, and the Autry American Indian Arts Marketplace. Tsosie has also been profiled by PBS New Mexico's Colores, Albuquerque Journal, Southwest Contemporary, and Native American Arts Magazine, which highlighted the emotional intensity and evolving visual language present throughout his practice.
Balancing Urgency, vulnerability, and painterly intensity, Tsosie continues to build a body of work that speaks to both personal transformation and the evolving landscape of contemporary Indigenous art.
